It is well known that breastfeeding is of utmost importance in a child's development due to the numerous benefits it offers. Among these benefits, the increased bond between mother and baby and the immunological protection provided to the child through the ingestion of immunoglobulins present in the milk stand out. Colostrum, the first milk produced by the mother, is extremely important for the newborn's (NB) acquired immunity, as it is rich in proteins and antibodies. Preterm colostrum contains even higher amounts of these proteins, which enhances the child's acquired immunity. This is particularly important due to the numerous invasive procedures preterm newborns undergo, increasing the risk of infection. However, preterm infants are often deprived of feeding in the first days of life, missing out on the benefits provided by colostrum. Colostrum therapy aims to provide the immunological protection benefits to preterm newborns without the need for swallowing, using minimal volumes of colostrum. This article reviews the literature to evaluate the efficacy and importance of this practice.
