Agroindustrial production generates a large amount of waste that is often disposed of incorrectly. These residues can be reused as biomass for the production of adsorbents in the removal of environmental contaminants. The adsorption technique has gained prominence, as it is an efficient method of treating effluents and water, but the choice of adsorbent is paramount. Activated carbon (AC) is recognized as a superior adsorbent and widely applied in the decontamination of water and effluents. In this wake, shrimp husk and rice husk emerge as an interesting biomass for the production of adsorbents. The objective of this research is to bring studies carried out using agro-industrial residues in the production of adsorbents and their use in the removal of environmental contaminants in contaminated water. The method used was the bibliographic review. Studies corroborate that adsorbent materials from agro-industrial waste are efficient in removing dyes, drugs, metals, among other contaminating compounds. The materials, in addition to being cheap, are excellent adsorbents available, with adsorption properties comparable to commercial materials.
